The O! Developers Team Chief Vladislav Romahov speaks about the interesting work developers may be engaged in working for a large company.

We can find interesting tasks for all professions as any business moves towards 100 per cent automation. The company has grown so much over the 15 years of its development that we can promise a lot of interesting work for development guys in many areas.

There is an opinion that development at a cell communication provider is only about telecom and quite less about development. Actually it is not like that at all, and O! has a lot of systems designed from scratch based on the company’s specifics.

The company has synergized its original systems and those supplied by vendors, for example, the billing system* that meets all international standards. This has been made to ensure maximum resilience and flexibility in providing services to customers.

By the way, out customers are not only the company’s subscribers but also units inside the company:

• IT Management needs tools for more convenient service and plan configuring, subsystem operation monitoring, server settings control and change, and collection and analysis of metrics. For these purposes, a number of service platform for IVR, USSD and SMS management have been developed.

• Technical Management needs utility programs** to monitor the equipment workload, review and analyze online traffic, review log files for further analysis, and make decisions based on the input logic.

• Commercial Management places the lion’s share of our orders. Those are the guys who make up new services, plans and options. The competitive environment on the market requires introduction of supercomplex plans to consider cell communication use preferences and patterns including when specific users like to watch something, how many minutes or gigabytes they spend, etc.

• For the Sales Unit, we do what help them sell efficiently and to high standards. Tools are needed for more flexible on-site plan assignment so that specialist do not have to take a huge bag of SIM cards with preselected plans with them. In addition to sales, registering of new users is needed, and special apps have been designed to make all this in a few minutes.

• Promoter supervision is also needed: a special system “keeps in mind” how many SIM cards have been issued to which promoters or sale points. It also includes statistics, a range of bonuses, assessments, and many more.

All this requires support from developers, so, telecom provider’s development is quite diverse and includes:

• financial services;

• technical services helping to monitor the situation even outside the office, 24/7;

• user services, the most loaded ones, with thousands of actions taken within a second: users check their balances and services or apply for new services – thousands of scenarios in total.

Atmosphere

We have got a positive and friendly atmosphere in our team. It is good to talk and share practices to each other and work together to find solutions. All managers are as balanced as they can be, they are developers either therefore they can appraise an employee’s input and expertise. They are willing to take part in handling a task, back up or share responsibility. You can ask any question to a manager of any level.

What matters most in our team is involvement and ability to communicate with people around you., as well as the willingness to evolve and help others to evolve too. If such a candidate has got a good sense of humor such person is wanted indeed.

Freedom of action

Although our team members are free to work remotely if needed, the adaptation usually takes place in office environment. You and your manager can choose the best working method together, whether it be office work, work from home or both methods combined.

We do not practice per-minute oversight. We got used to trust people, and high-quality and prompt result is the best indicator for us.

If you need to stay in the office beyond the working hours or leave earlier or use a day for resolving urgent matters your manager will always try to meet you halfway.
