Accelerated SIM card unblocking for roaming launched in Russia

Russian mobile operators have introduced an accelerated verification mechanism for foreign SIM cards allowing roaming subscribers to gain faster access to mobile internet and SMS services.

At the same time, the mandatory 24-hour “cooling period” remains in effect on the networks of Russian mobile operators. During this period, access to mobile internet and messaging services may be restricted at the request of state authorities of the Russian Federation.

How accelerated SIM card unblocking works

Subscribers now receive an SMS message with a special link from the operator whose network they are registered on. By clicking the link, the user must complete a simple CAPTCHA verification to confirm that the action is performed by a human. After that, access to mobile services is granted by the host operator without waiting for the 24-hour period. The unblocking speed depends on the network load of the operator and may take several minutes.

The introduction of these mitigation measures will provide more comfortable use of communication services and improve access to mobile services upon arrival in the Russian Federation.
